This Privacy Policy explains what information AfricansAsk collects, why we collect it, how it's used, and the choices you have. We've tried to write this in plain language rather than dense legal text — if anything is unclear, reach out via our Company page.
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Account info | Username, email address, password (stored as a secure one-way hash, never in plain text) |
| Profile info you choose to add | Display name, bio, country, avatar |
| Content you post | Questions, answers, comments, dreams, testimonies, images and other uploads |
| Activity data | Upvotes, bookmarks, hidden posts, followed users, categories you browse |
| Basic technical data | IP address at signup/login, browser type, timestamps — used for security and abuse prevention |
We use a small number of third-party services to run AfricansAsk — for example, our hosting provider (which stores the platform's data) and image hosting for post uploads. These providers only process data as needed to provide their service to us, and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.
When you use the "Share" feature to post to WhatsApp, Telegram, Twitter/X, or Facebook, you're taken to that platform directly — we don't share your account data with them as part of that action, only the public post link.
We may disclose information if required by law, such as in response to a valid legal request from a government or law enforcement authority, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of AfricansAsk or our users.
AfricansAsk uses a session cookie to keep you logged in, and a small local storage entry to remember your theme preference (light/dark mode). We don't use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking cookies at this stage. If that changes as the platform grows, we'll update this policy and notify users clearly.
We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal profile data within a reasonable period, though some content you've posted may remain visible in anonymized or attributed-to-"deleted user" form if it's been replied to or quoted by others, to preserve the integrity of ongoing discussions.
AfricansAsk is operated from Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, and our servers and data are primarily hosted and processed there. Because our community spans the African continent and its global diaspora, your information may be transferred to and processed in Canada regardless of where you're located. By using the Service, you consent to this transfer.
AfricansAsk is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the minimum age required to use online platforms in their country of residence. If we become aware that we've collected data from a child without appropriate consent, we'll take steps to delete it.
You can update your display name, bio, country, and theme preference anytime in Settings. You can delete individual posts, unfollow users, and un-hide posts you've previously hidden. If you'd like your account fully deleted, or you'd like a copy of the data we hold about you, contact us via the Company page and we'll process the request as promptly as our team allows.
Passwords are hashed using industry-standard methods and are never stored or transmitted in plain text. We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data — including restricting internal access and using secure connections — but no online platform can guarantee absolute security, and we encourage you to use a strong, unique password.
We may update this policy as the platform grows and introduces new features. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated "Last updated" date, and where changes are significant, we'll make a reasonable effort to notify active users directly.
